Douglas Miller's ministry at Wesley began in July, 2007
He grew up in New Zealand, and migrated to Australia at age 21. He has been minister in churches in Victoria, at Wycheproof, Moe-Yallourn, Warrandyte, Belmont, Wodonga and Bendigo South, and was Presbytery Minister in Nepean Presbytery from January 1998 to June, 2007.
He trained as a minister of the Presbyterian Church, and learnt to know the Methodist tradition when the churches united to form the Uniting Church in June, 1977.
He is married to Leonie, and has three adult children and one grandchild.
He stresses the value of studygroups, and and learned the value of the insights that people of various Asian and Pacific cultures bring to the Uniting Church. He values and will seek to enhance the cross-cultural nature of Wesley Church.
He was recently asked "What makes you angry or frustrated about the Church?"
His answer was:
- I get passionate about preaching the gospel, and about the need to explain issues clearly in language as simple as the issues will allow.
- I get frustrated by disregard of the orthodox faith, often with little understanding of the issues. This especially relates to the doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation, which are central to everything else.
- Also the Protestant tendency to reinterpret everything every 20 years or so, and disregard the learning of previous generations. This often means taking one idea, which may have some merit, and seeing it as the key which unlocks all our problems.
- Also the Church's tendency to bring over the latest guru from North America to resolve our problems.
- And When the Church denies natural justice to parties affected by its decisions. The Uniting Church has often been quick to challenge governments about injustice, while being less than careful about the justice of its own actions.
